The Global Ecolabelling Network.
The three strategic objectives for the GEN have been identified:
- Capacity Building and Membership Expansion
- Enhanced Co-operation and Internal Communications
- International Promotion and Awareness Raising.
GEN plans to work towards these objectives by:
- managing, financing and implementing a technical assistance program for new and developing program
- further developing communications in order to enhance co-operation among members, with particular emphasis on exploring opportunities for harmonization and mutual recognition;
- Associate membership, which was approved at the 2000 meeting, will bring five new organizations to GEN;
- Harmonized specifications will be developed and adopted in more than three product categories;
- The GEN will be regularly invited to participate in a range of information sessions for international intergovernmental bodies;
- Requests for technical assistance will outstrip the core resources available, but the GEN will have partnerships in place with foundations and development banks to meet these needs;
- Ecolabelling as a trade concern will be replaced with the recognition that ecolabelling in fact enhances trade; and
- The GEN will develop partnerships with other environmental labeling organizations to use the marketplace for environmental improvement.
