A step ahead for the environment: achieving real results

Building a strong environmental platform A strong environmental platform supports the long term success of our business and contributes to a more sustainable future for all of us. Our actions to reduce our environmental impact are based around four principles:

  1. Measuring and minimising our carbon footprint
  2. Actually reusing and recycling products locally
  3. Basing our ESD initiatives on robust science and having them independently certified
  4. Ensuring all of our ESD initiatives are both environmentally and economically viable.

Retaining embodied energy A significant amount of energy goes into the production of high quality carpet tiles. We strive to retain the energy embodied in our products and not waste this precious resource. We do this by either reusing or recycling the product at the end of its useful life.

EarthPlus® reuse program The unique EarthPlus® environmental program provides an option to reuse any used Ontera carpet tiles without any destructive processes or significant additional energy input. Used carpet tiles can be given a second (and possibly third) life through a proprietary process that will super-clean the surface, retexture and superimpose a new design to refresh the appearance.

Responsible recycling The only realistic way to recover the valuable resource embodied in our product is Responsible Recycling, which means that it is both environmentally and economically sustainable. Ontera has developed an in-line recycling process to recover all of the components of the product which are reused as a post-consumer recycled component of new tile backing.

Real results Both of these activities are conducted in Australia and do not rely on the highly questionable practice of shipping used product around the world. Our EarthPlus® reuse and Responsible Recycling programs have retained the embodied energy in over 100,000m2 of used product and diverted over 500 tonnes of used carpet tile from ending up as landfill. Many of our customers now actually walk on product that is well into its second life in use.
